Rokia Traore was born in 1974 in the region Belidougou Mali, near the Mauritanian border. But his childhood was spent over the assignments of his diplomat father. Rokia is evolving in a very protected environment that blends tradition and modernity, particularly in music. His father practiced saxophone and his sisters practiced singing in traditional family ceremonies. As for the young Rokia, she listens to jazz (like his brother), blues (like his father) and everything a teenager in the Western world plays in the 70 and 80. Not being from a family of griots, musical modernity is not a taboo in his family.

However, Rokia does in no way distracts from the musical environment of his country of origin. The griot tradition and the great Malian voices have no secrets from her. With an exceptional voice, Rokia working with a friend of his father, the old master Massamou Welle that helps the young woman to build her voice. In adulthood and after multiple round trips with his country, Rokia moved to his homeland. It does not take long to write herself a few songs with Western influences mixed with traditional sounds captivate audiences of all people of his generation and students.

When she was 20 years old, Rokia is therefore already an artist known in his country. The musician Ali Farka Toure, star in his country, Rokia mark. He has distilled his learning the guitar and encouraged him to compose.

In 1995, the title "Finini" a strong success. Rokia made many concerts. It is a bright young woman who prefers to study music in his country as part of a large school in Europe. Thus, after some time in a school in Belgium, she returned to Mali to make the song his job. She took courses in Bamako and works with musician Souleymane Kolly. Invited to MASA (Marché des Arts and Entertainment in Africa), she prefers to reject it and continue working.

The breakthrough came in 1997 when Rokia is competition for the Discovery Award Africa Radio France Internationale. With his acoustic guitar and accompanied by some traditional instruments, it has a title to the children, "Mouneïssa. Chaired by Papa Wemba, the jury is immediately seduced by this loud and this outstanding musical personality. She won the prize against more established artists and more experienced.

From that day his fame beyond the borders of Mali. After two big concerts in quick succession in Bamako in December 97, both sponsored by Oumou Sangare and Habib Koïté, Rokia flew to Europe to record her album. Boxed in Amiens in northern France, "Mouneïssa" therefore falls in late March 98. Fully signed by the young woman, the nine tracks on the album are written and sung in Bambara. His musical talent is well worth its donations author. His texts are long poems and philosophical heavily tinted soft blues.

In May, in Brussels Rokia starts a European tour which took her to Switzerland, Germany, then in Paris May 25 But she is also invited to many festivals including the Mixed Music Angouleme end of May or the Francofolies de la Rochelle in July.
